Travel & Accommodations
Nipigon is the gateway to the North Shore. Whether you are flying in from across the country or making the legendary drive along Lake Superior, getting here is part of the adventure.
?? Flying In
The closest major airport is Thunder Bay International (YQT).
- Car Rentals: All major agencies (Avis, Budget, Enterprise) are available at the airport.
- The Drive: Nipigon is a scenic 1 hour and 15 minute drive east of Thunder Bay on the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 11/17).
?? Driving Directions
From Minnesota (Duluth / Twin Cities)
- Route: Take Hwy 61 North through Grand Marais to the Pigeon River Border Crossing.
- Pro Tip: Once you cross into Canada, continue through Thunder Bay on Hwy 11/17 East. The drive from the border to Nipigon is approximately 2 hours.
From Michigan (Sault Ste. Marie / Eastern US)
- Route: Cross the International Bridge into Canada and head West on Hwy 17.
- The Experience: This is one of the most beautiful drives in North America, winding along the rugged North Shore of Lake Superior. It is roughly 6.5 to 7 hours of driving through Lake Superior Provincial Park and Wawa.
?? Where to Stay
We recommend two distinct types of experiences depending on your preference:
1. The Full Wilderness Experience: The Lodge at Red Rock
For those looking for a high-end, all-inclusive lodge feel with incredible views of the water.
2. Convenient & Local: The Beaver Inn
Located right in the heart of Nipigon. It is clean, reliable, and perfect for anglers who want to be close to the marina and local restaurants.
??? Meeting for the Trip
Most of our expeditions depart from the Nipigon Marina, but depending on the species we are targeting, we may meet at specific boat launches on Lake Nipigon or the North Shore. I will coordinate the exact meeting location with you 48 hours before your trip based on the latest weather and fishing reports.
Traveler's Note: If you are crossing the border, ensure you have a valid Passport or Nexus card. For the latest border wait times at Pigeon River or Sault Ste. Marie, check the CBSA website.
